After Furniture Row Racing announced it wanted to get a jump start on the 2013 season by moving Kurt Busch in early, Regan Smith knew he was going to be out of the No. 78 ride after Talladega. Most people speculated that he would end up in the car Busch left and that is what was officially announced on Sunday.
Regan Smith will drive Phoenix Racing's No. 51 Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday night.
"We're looking forward to having Regan in our car," Phoenix Racing general manager Steve Barkdoll said. "Regan performed the tire test at Kansas, and that should be helpful at intermediate tracks. We believe he can help get our program back on track and help attract sponsorship going forward."
There is no word if Smith will be the driver of the No. 51 car for the rest of 2012 or if the team plans on looking at other drivers as well. The team is really trying to attract a full-time sponsor which is something they could not do with Busch in the car.
Smith helped build Furniture Row Racing into a competitive organization week in and week out and might be just the driver that Phoenix Racing needs. Smith is great at not wrecking race cars which is always a plus for an under funded team.
Smith will be on an audition with the James Finch owned team at least at Charlotte but Smith said he has been talking with multiple teams about a ride in 2013.
