Firestone, the tire company of the IZOD IndyCar Series since 1996, has signed an extension to stay with the IndyCar series through the 2018 season.
Earlier in the year there was speculation that former IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard was close to signing a deal with Continental earlier in the season after Firestone's contract ran out at the end of the 2013 season. The new contract ends that speculation.
"The Firestone brand's significant contributions to IZOD IndyCar Series racing are the result of more than 100 years of experience competing in this sport, most recently as part of a continuous 22-year partnership," said Jeff Belskus, interim president and CEO of INDYCAR, in a statement. "The agreement expands our opportunity to continue working together to provide on-track excitement for our fans and grow the sport through coordinated and consistent off-track promotions. This is an important relationship for both Firestone and INDYCAR and we are very pleased to continue the association."
Mario Andretti sent out a tweet saying "News that Firestone will be the IndyCar tire supplier til 2018 is a great x-mas gift to drivers. Drivers feel safe on Firestones." IndyCar driver Ryan Briscoe retweeted Andretti's tweet.
