It was a one off deal for Kevin Swindell. Swindell was subbing for the injured John Wes Townley in the #15 Venturini Motorsports Toyota in Sunday's SuperChevyStores.com 100 and for Swindell it was a race to remember as he came out on top in the dirt race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
“This is awesome,” Swindell said. “They gave me a great car and did a lot of work on it. I’m so thankful for the chance to take this car to victory lane.”
Swindell had a tough day making contact with the wall several times, however the experienced dirt racer persevered. He led 21 of the races 100 laps including the last 11 laps, where he had to defend his position against ARCA Racing Series points leader Mason Mitchell. Grant Enfinger finished in the third position with Frank Kimmel coming home fourth and Will Kimmel finished in the fifth position. Kelly Kovski finished in the sixth spot with Justin Boston coming home seventh. Kenny Schrader finished in the eighth spot with Shane Cockram finishing ninth and Austin Wayne Self rounded out the top 10.
Qualifying was canceled Sunday morning as track crews had to get the one-mile dirt oval in racing condition after overnight rain. That put points lead Mason Mitchell on the pole. He led the first 31 laps before James Swanson took the lead while other cars pitted. He led four laps for the first laps led in his ARCA Racing Series career and he finished a career best 14th.
Justin Boston then led from laps 35 until 46 when Grant Enfinger took the lead. He led until lap 52 when Kevin Swindell took his first lead of the race. Enfinger would take the lead back on lap 62 and would lead until lap 89. Enfinger led a race-high 33 laps but it was Swindell that passed him and led the final 12 laps to score the win. The margin of victory was 8.317 seconds at the end.
Kelly Kovski was the fastest car in practice earlier in the day and he drove to a sixth place finish after starting 27th. Shane Cockrum's run from 29th to ninth, Ryan Unzicker's run from 28th to 12th, and AJ Fike's run from 24th to 13th were also very impressive. Tom Hessert finished 11th. The race had six cautions for 32 laps.
Mason Mitchell kept his points lead over Grant Enfinger as the two battle it out.
The next race on the ARCA Racing Series schedule is the Herr's Live Life With Flavor 200 at Madison International Speedway on Sunday, August 24th. The race will be broadcasted live on CBS Sports Network.
